“The Yankee Aura”
Joe Torre tells of a 2005 game against the Devil Rays in which Yankees pitcher Kevin Brown stormed off the field down 6-0 after one inning, and later was found by the manager, shirtless and “curled up on the floor in a tiny crevice in the corner of a storage area in the back of the clubhouse.”
“What are you doing?” Torre said.
“I’m not going to go out there and pitch anymore,” Brown said.
“What are you going to do?”
“I’m going to go home.”
“You might as well go home,” Torre told him, but warned him that if he quit at that point he was through with the team.
Brown put his jersey back on, returned to the mound and threw four more innings.
