The 7-year-old, second-grade student at Downtown Montessori Academy wrote a letter to Vice President Joe Biden and other officials a few months ago with a simple idea for making the world safer. His teacher Jenny Aicher says his letter suggested that if guns shot chocolate bullets, no one would get hurt.

Dog shoots Florida man Gregory Dale Lanier in the leg with a 9mm handgun

WTSP: A Highlands County man is recovering after police say he was shot by an unlikely suspect: his pet dog. 35-year-old Gregory Dale Lanier was driving with his pet pooch on Saturday when the dog kicked a .380 pistol that was on the truck’s floor. … No attempted murder charges are expected for Fido; police have ruled the shooting accidental. Sebring Police Commander Steve Carr says he never heard of a case like this before.

Today, President Obama announced sweeping set of policies, including 23 executive orders, aimed at reducing gun violence. The unveiling was the result of the Joe Biden-led task force Obama formed last month in the wake of the Sandy Hook shootings, and proposed policies include an assault weapons ban, universal background checks, and improved access to mental health care. The Washington Post calls it “the most expansive gun-control policies in a generation,” and the fact that the president issued no less than 23 executive orders suggests that he wants to avoid congress as much as possible with this (which, given his first term, is understandable). Here’s the flashy White House document outlining the proposals, here’s a list of the executive orders (one of which, somewhat amusingly, is “Nominate an ATF director”), and here’s audio of the event (courtesy of Matt Keys). Photo credit: AP source

On July 29, 2007, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia delivered the opinion of the Court in DC v. Heller, the 2nd Amendment case. Justice Scalia makes clear that the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms is not an unlimited right. The 2nd Amendment is “not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose.”
